This multi-year series (2017-2018) started off with SHBC engaging with over 20 big and small cities in the province on small housing. In the end, we partnered with three municipalities: Maple Ridge, Nelson and Vancouver. Through the project, each city explored its own unique and iterative plan and timeline to ultimately lead to an expansion of its existing infill programs and introduce more small housing options in their communities. SHBC assisted municipal staff members to review policy and zoning regulations, and conduct industry and public outreach outreach to better understand local barriers and opportunities for small housing development, as each project unfolded as the process grew.
Project outputs included: Maple Ridge laneway design lookbook, Nelson laneway how-to guide and design guidelines, report on pre-approved design plans, and the Permanently Affordable Homeownership feasibility study with the City of Vancouver.
