In November 2021, the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation announced Small Housing BC as one of the recipients of the CMHC Housing Supply Challenge Getting Started incubation funding. The project is aimed at providing tools and supports to expand the supply of gentle density housing in communities across BC, with a focus on policy and regulatory advancements.
Through extensive research and stakeholder engagement with voices from across the housing supply space, including planning practitioners, builders, real estate industry professionals, and policymakers, SHBC is working to better understand the critical resources and supports needed to advance this work.
The emerging strategies are to:
- Build public and local Council understanding
- Strengthen planning-technical expertise and support local innovation
- Create a community of practice for municipal planners around gentle density work, and
- Convene and facilitate inter-jurisdictional and intersectoral coordination.
Much of this work will be supported through building a webtool to host resources and the growing knowledge network of practitioners and researchers working in this area.
If granted implementation funding, this sector-wide support program will launch in late Summer/early Fall 2022.
